How to use this dog calorie calculator

Wondering how many calories your dog should eat? Add the weight and pick the way of life that fits your dog, and the tool shows the calories and cups for a day.

What to add in each box

Weight

Type your dog's weight and pick lb, oz, kg or g. Use a weight from the last few days. If your dog is overweight, use the weight your vet wants your dog to reach.

Which one fits your dog best

Pick the choice that matches your dog: adult neutered or spayed, adult not neutered, less active, weight loss plan, active, or hard working. Each choice uses a different calorie level, so pick the closest one.

Calories in 1 cup

Find the calories (kcal) in one cup on your dog food bag. Most dog foods have 300 to 450. We use it to turn calories into cups.

Reading your result

You will see the calories a day, a safe range, and about how many cups to feed. We also show how many calories can come from treats, and a chart for every life stage. Change the food slowly and watch your dog's weight.

How Many Calories Should My Dog Eat?

Every dog needs a different amount of food. It depends on weight, age, how much your dog moves, and whether your dog has been neutered or spayed. If you feed too much, your dog slowly gets heavy. If you feed too little, your dog can lose weight and energy.

This dog calorie calculator gives you a clear starting number. You add the weight and pick the life stage, and the tool shows the calories and the cups for one day.

How the Dog Calorie Calculator Works

First, the tool finds the calories your dog burns when resting. This is just for the body to run: breathing, heart, staying warm. It is worked out from your dog's weight in kilograms.

Then it multiplies this number by a life stage number. A calm, neutered adult needs about 1.6 times the resting calories. An active dog needs about 2 times. The table below shows each choice with an example for a 50 lb (23 kg) dog.

Life stageTimes resting caloriesExample: 50 lb dog
Adult, neutered or spayed1.6x1,164 calories a day
Adult, not neutered1.8x1,309 calories a day
Less active or gains weight easily1.4x1,018 calories a day
Weight loss plan1x727 calories a day
Active dog2x1,455 calories a day
Hard working dog3x2,182 calories a day

These numbers are a starting point. Some dogs burn more and some burn less, so watch your dog's weight and body shape.

From Calories to Cups

Dog foods are very different. One cup of a light food may have 300 calories, and one cup of a rich food may have 450 or more. Look at your food bag for the calories in one cup, add it to the tool, and it shows the cups for one day. Most dogs do best with 2 meals a day, so split the cups in two.

What About Treats?

Treats count too. A good rule is to keep treats under 10% of the daily calories. The tool shows this number in your result. If you give many treats, give a little less at meal time.

Calories for Weight Loss

If your dog is too heavy, the weight loss choice uses fewer calories. For a weight loss plan, the calories should be worked out for the weight your dog should be, not the weight your dog is now. Please ask your vet for that target weight and for a safe plan, because losing weight too fast is not good for a dog. You can check where your dog stands with our healthy dog weight calculator.

How to Adjust the Food Amount

  • Feed the amount from the tool for 3 to 4 weeks.
  • Weigh your dog every 2 weeks and write the number down.
  • If the weight is going up and you want it to stay the same, cut the food by about 10%.
  • If your dog is getting thin, add about 10%.
  • You should feel the ribs easily under a thin layer of fat.

Puppies and Older Dogs

Puppies need more calories for their size because they are growing. For a young dog, use our puppy feeding calculator instead. Older dogs often move less and need fewer calories. To see when your dog counts as a senior, try our dog age calculator.

When to Talk to Your Vet

Talk to your vet if your dog has a health problem, is pregnant or feeding puppies, takes medicine, or loses or gains weight fast. This tool is a general guide and not vet advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many calories should my dog eat a day?

It depends on weight and life stage. As a guide, a neutered adult dog of 20 lb needs about 585 calories a day, a 50 lb dog about 1,160, and an 80 lb dog about 1,650. Add your dog's weight to the calculator for your own number.

How many calories does a 50 lb dog need?

A calm, neutered or spayed adult dog of 50 lb needs about 1,160 calories a day. An active dog of the same weight may need about 1,450. A dog that is not neutered needs about 1,300.

How many cups of food is that?

It depends on the food. If your dog's food has 350 calories in one cup, a 50 lb neutered adult dog needs a little over 3 cups a day. Type the calories per cup from your food bag into the calculator to get the exact cups.

Do I use my dog's weight now, or the weight my dog should be?

For a normal weight dog, use the weight now. For an overweight dog, ask your vet for the target weight and use that in the calculator for a weight loss plan.

Why do the life stage choices change the calories?

Dogs that move more burn more. Dogs that are neutered or spayed often burn a little less. Each choice uses a different number, so pick the one that fits your dog best.

How many treats can my dog have?

Keep treats under 10% of the daily calories. The calculator shows this number for you.

Is this dog calorie calculator accurate?

It is a starting point, not an exact number. Watch your dog's weight and body shape for 3 to 4 weeks, then add or remove a little food.
